Whether you are applying for your first teaching position or moving to a new school, your CV needs to demonstrate more than subject knowledge. Schools look for candidates who can manage a classroom, engage students, and contribute to the wider school community.

Key Sections for a Teaching CV

  • Contact details
  • Personal statement (3–5 lines tailored to the school and role)
  • Qualifications and certifications (PGCE, QTS, DBS, subject degree)
  • Teaching experience (school name, year groups, subjects)
  • Key achievements (exam results, initiatives led)
  • Skills (classroom management, curriculum planning, SEN experience)
  • Professional development and CPD
  • References (head teacher and another senior staff member)

Write a Targeted Personal Statement

Schools receive dozens of applications and your personal statement is how you stand out. Mention the specific school by name, the year groups and subjects you are applying to teach, and one or two things you genuinely find compelling about education. Avoid generic statements about 'making a difference.'

Show Classroom Impact

Wherever possible, include measurable outcomes. Examples:

  • Improved Year 9 maths pass rates from 61% to 78% over two academic years
  • Introduced a reading programme for SEN students that improved comprehension scores by an average of 1.5 grade levels
  • Led an after-school STEM club with 24 students that won a regional robotics competition

Include Your Qualifications Clearly

List your Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent prominently. Include the institution where you completed your PGCE or teacher training, and the year. If you have a DBS certificate, mention it. Schools will verify all of these before making an offer.
