Nursing CVs are read by clinical managers, HR departments, and sometimes by automated applicant tracking systems. Your CV must immediately communicate your registration status, clinical competencies, and care experience in a clear and professional format.

Nursing CV Structure

  • Contact details
  • NMC Pin / nursing registration number (include prominently)
  • Professional summary (2–3 lines)
  • Clinical experience (reverse chronological)
  • Education and training (nursing degree, university, year)
  • Certifications (BLS, ACLS, ILS, IV therapy, catheterisation, etc.)
  • Key clinical skills
  • References (two clinical referees)

Always Include Your NMC Registration

Your NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) pin number is the first thing a recruiter will verify. Include it next to your name or in your contact section. If you are not yet registered, note 'NMC registration pending — expected [month/year].'

Describe Clinical Experience Specifically

Avoid vague descriptions like 'provided patient care.' Instead, be specific about the ward or department, patient population, bed numbers, and your responsibilities. Example: 'Delivered care to up to 8 high-dependency patients per shift in a 24-bed surgical ward, including post-operative monitoring, wound care, and pain management protocols.'

List All Relevant Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Immediate Life Support (ILS)
  • IV therapy and cannulation
  • Medication administration and PGDs
  • Moving and handling
  • Mental health first aid (if applicable)

Tailor to Your Specialisation

Whether you work in A&E, paediatrics, theatre, ICU, community nursing, or mental health — tailor your skills and experience bullets to the specific area you are applying into. Generic nursing CVs rarely get interviews in specialist roles.
